Only the top 18 overall performances in each field event from all the six groups combined qualify for the final meet of the scholastic season. Perhaps the three most anticipated events involving South Jersey entries will be the high hurdles, shot put and run. In the high hurdles, Willing- high hurdles this season, 13.7.
Reynolds has the statjtop long jump this season, 25-1V4. The shot put will feature five athletes who cracked the 60-foot barrier on Saturday, including Penns Grove's Group 2 champion Chris Robinson, who set a South Jersey and group record with a 63-HV to defeat Hopewell Valley junior Aaron Echternacht, who had a 63-6. Both 63s came on final puts. Five of Robinson's six puts Saturday were over 60 feet. His serie- Courier-Post Staff There will be plenty of drama and high expectations tomorrow at the State Track and Field Meet of Champions to be held at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.
And South Jersey athletes will be right in the middle of the action that begins at 5 p.m. There is no team scoring at the meet. In the running events, the meet brings together the top five finishers in each of the six groups 1 defending meet champion in the high hurdles and long jump was upset in the Group 4 final on Saturday by Elizabeth's Torin Moore. Reynolds went on to win state Group 4 titles in the intermediate hurdles and long jump, but will only compete in the long jump and high hurdles tomorrow where the Willingboro senior will try to avenge the loss to Moore. Last year, Reynolds beat Moore in the all-groups meet.
Reynolds and Moore are tied for 60-8 and 60-lVi. The Penns Grove senior placed fourth in the all-groups meet last year. Also in the shot put competition will be Edgewood Chris Bolden, who won his second straight Group 3 title with a put of 60-5V4. Bolden became only the fourth South Jersey athlete with a put of 60-feet, while Robinson became the fifth in the Group 2 competition, which followed Group 3. Robinson, Echternacht and Bolden will be joined tomorrow by Creskill's Kevin Quinn, the Group State's best ready to cook up records H.S.
Girls' Track and Madison Central's John Wo ciechowski, who won the Group title with a 60-9'4. The will featuUrl Woodrow Wilson's Group 3 cham pion Shane DeGannes, Shawnee'i Group 4 winner Chris Sallade, arjft St Augustine's Group champion Mark SivierL Franklin's Clinton Bell, second to DeGannes in the Group 3 race, will also be a major factor. DeGannes ran a state 4:16.45 on Saturday, -while Bell had a second-best 4:17.7. SaT-lade won Group 4 with a 4:18.5) and Sivieri won Group in 4:20.84. Sivieri ran a 4:19.6 at the Knights of Columbus Meet two weeks ago.
Camden's Albert Donawa, the Group 4 champion in the 3,200, ran a 9:09.9 in the sectionals two weeks ago and should be pushed by Paul VI's Joe Cranston, who won the Group A title in 9:19.0. 4 Eastern's Mike Shemonsky, who won Group 3 800 in 1:54.32, will have to beat Newark West Side's Ernesto Perez, who won Group 4 in 1:51.61. South Jersey runners also will he strong contenders in the intermediate hurdles with Willingboro's Devon Patton, second to Reynolds in Group 4 with a 54.09; Vineland's Marlon Morris, third in Group 4 with a 54.11; Kingsway's Group 2 champion Benny Liles, 54.09; Eastern's Group 3 winner Bill Mobley, 54.28; and Camden Catholic's Otis Peoples, the Group A champion wth a 54.77. Willingboro's Gil Winters, the Group 4 javelin champion, had the third best throw in the nation this season entering the state group meet 219-3 and won his second straight state title with a By LEE WAGNER Courier-Post Staff Now it boils down to the best of the best. Cherokee High School senior Monica Olkowski and Cherry Hill East senior Liz Griesback will attempt to defend titles won a year ago at the state track and field Meet of Champions tomorrow at 5 p.m.
at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield. Olkowski, who is headed to Tennessee next fall, and Griesback, who will matriculate at Clemson, join Mount Olive's Christine Engel, who won the 1,600 in 1989, as the only defending champions. The meet brings together the top five runners in each group on the track and the top 18 performers in the field events and the relay. Olkowski will be running her final race as a representative of Griesback can expect some competition before repeating. Delsea's Anna Leech had taken over the lead in South Jersey in the javelin with a 134-8 in the Group 2 competition just prior to Griesback's winning Group 4 toss of 139-2.
Also expected to contend in that event is Montville's Jodie Phillips, who won the Group 3 competition with a 136-0. Overbrook senior Angela Solomon also has aspirations of going out with a record-breaking effort Solomon finished second in the shot put to Hillside's Karen Harris, 43-916, last year but broke Denise Thomas' 1980 South Jersey record of 41-10 in the process with a 43-6. Saturday, Solomon finished second in the Group 4 shot to Plain-field's Nicole Sims. One matchup that may not take place is in the 100-meter hurdles. Woodbury senior Jennifer Hei-singer is tied with Eastern's Trina Ragsdale for South Jersey's best time, each with a 14.4.
Both girls won their respective groups on Sat- urday, Ragsdale in Group 3 with a 14.90, and Heisinger in Group 1 with a 15.04. But Heisinger pulled a muscle in her upper thigh and is questionable for tomorrow's meet "It certainly feels a lot better than it did, but I just can't say right now whether 1 11 run or not," said Heisinger. "I want to run but I don't want to go up there unless I feel I can give it my best shot" That would narrow down the possibilities with Ragsdale facing Paulsboro's Heather Carney, second in Group 1 in 15.17, Newark-Science's Anisa Tucker, third in Group 1 in 15.18, Roxbury's Carla Debiasi, first in Group 4 in 15.09, Freehold Boro's Rona Henderson, first in Group 2 in 14.80, and Paul VI's Karen Still, first in Group A in 15.38. Ocean City's Carla Roberts is the top qualifier in the 400 hurdles. Roberts ran a 1:03.72 en route to the Group 3 title.
Attempting to keep Roberts from reigning as the Meet of Champions gold medalist will be Millville's Suzi Breig, Clearview's Bridget Dean, Newark-Science's Natwon Harp, Monmouth Regional's Carrie Kimball, and Still, 1:05.42. Other area athletes expected to contend for championships are Washington Township's Gina DiBenedetto and Paulsboro's Kandy Owen in the discus; Cherry Hill East's Teneacia Smith and Clearview's Tiffany O'Neal in the sprints and the long jump; Woo-drow Wilson's Sharlene Daley in the 200; Clearview's Carrie Thompson, Kingsway's Lori Townsend, Paulsboro's Erica More and Paul VI's Sandy Wright in the distance races, and Holy Cross' Missy Blaney and Haddon Heights' Ivy Foster in the 400. Cherokee and will be zeroing in on the South Jersey 800-meter record of 2:10.1 set by Washington Township's Michele Rowan in 1982. Stiff competition makes breaking the record a real possiblity. Beside Engel, Vineland sophomore Krista Ferrara will chase Olkowski in the Group 4 race.
"That was a goal of Monica's coming into the season," said Cherokee coach Tom Katsanos. "That's the magic number she's been chasing all year. The thing is, in order to run a time like that, you need the competition to push you. "So far this spring, up to the sectional and state meets, no one has been pushing her. Now, with the competition presenting itself, she really could do it." Last night, the South Jersey Coaches of Women's Sports (SJCWS) closed the 1990 scholastic season with a dinner at Chubby's restaurant to do just that. With more than 100 coaches, athletes and their families, and athletic directors in attendance, the SJCWS honored girls' coaches of winter sports and scholar-athletes, and handed out a special recognition award for service to women's sports. Jean Phelps, who has been president of the SJCWS for the past 10 years, said the organization's purpose is to pay homage to coaches. "It is important to honor the coaches," said Phelps, who had served as secretarytreasurer of SJCWS before becoming president. "The coach needs to have a pat on the back from his or her peers." The SJCWS was founded in 1966 by retired Glassboro State College coach Dr.
Pearl Kowalski; Bea Thomas, longtime field hockey coach at Moorestown High School; and the late Collingswood field hockey coach Bea Markwick, all three of whom are known for their dedication to women's sports South Jersey. As president, -Phelps set out to expand the organization's membership. "I didn't make any drastic changes," Phelps said. "I computerized everything and wanted to get more people out for our dinners. It used to be that, when we had an awards dinner, we only had about 30 people.
We couldn't even get the coaches out to accept their own awards." Last night, it was clear things have changed for the SJCWS. Of the 22 awards presented to coaches, less than five were absent, signaling growth in the interest and importance of women's sports. "It's a neat honor," said new president Anita Evans, who is the basketball and assistant track coach at Paulsboro High School. "We not only recognize coaches from conferences but for all sports throughout the year. It is nice to be honored by your peers." Twenty-three coaches received the "Winter Sports Awards" for guiding girls' teams to group, sectional and state championships in basketball, bowling and swimming.
A surprised Barbara Man-love, a former basketball and field hockey official, and Haddon Heights teacher and former coach, was given the the "Outstanding Contribution Award." Manlove, who has taught school at Haddon Heights for 20 years, jokingly remarked on the ability of her school's hockey team to never get past its nemesis Haddonfield. "I was shocked, absolutely shocked when they called my name for the award," said Manlove, who accepted the honor with her husband George at her side. It was the couple's 30th wedding anniversary. "When I was listening to some of the things Debbie (DiPaolo) was saying in the introduction. I said to myself, 'Oh, "Now I'm just teaching and a loyal Haddon Heights fan.
I don't miss any of the girls' games. I go to them all, but hockey is my favorite. When I was coaching hockey, we never could win a championship though. We always came in second behind Haddonfield." Ironically, the Haddon Heights hockey team which finally won a Colonial Conference championship in 1989, sharing the honor with Haddonfield. Five scholar athletes also were honored, with two of them receiving $500 awards.
The scholarships were given to seniors who displayed scholarship, athletic ability, leadership, need and sportsmanship. The honorees were Leslie Joyce, a hockey, basketball and softball player at Pitman; Jean Forsha, who lettered in hockey and basketball at Clearview; and Cindy Jones of West Deptford, who excelled in soccer, basketball and softball. Sherry Wilgus, who swims and runs track for Kingsway, and Cherokee's Jennifer Beckett, who plays soccer and runs track, both received the $500 scholarships.
