Monet or Chinese Watercolour? As I walked by these artworks, a question lingers in my mind. During the recent holidays, I had the privilege of visiting an exhibition dedicated to the esteemed French-based painter, and my family elder, Zao Wou-Ki (赵无极). Here, I encountered a remarkable array of his works created in collaboration with poets between 1940 and 2000, accompanied by translations of over sixty illustrated poems. From abstraction to figuration, Zao employed colour, line, and form to convey profound emotions. In this artistic journey, he re-discovered the East through a Western lens, much like many poets who contemplate the West from an Eastern perspective. The interplay between these two realms is not merely a matter of technique; it offers a reflective dialogue on shared destinies, leading to a renewed understanding of civilization and eternity, the ordinary and the extraordinary, as well as an exploration of the forces that life, time, and existence. In this light, I began to grasp the significance of his first name, "Wou-Ki," which translates to "limitless(无极)." It embodies a journey from duality (太极) to unity(无极), from the delineation of opposites to their harmonious integration. What was once starkly black and white now reveals a tapestry where "you" inhabit "me," and "I" dwell within "you", as Yin & Yang(阴阳) stated. Philippe MONIN

Eighteen Ted DixonAugust 22 – October 13, 2024 | Opening Reception: September 7, 2024Hudson, NYSusan Eley Fine Art presents abstract paintings by Ted Dixon. This installation expands upon Dixon’s sustained inquiry into his unwavering commitment to the possibilities and power of abstraction. "Eighteen" features his reading of “The 1619 Project,” developed by Nikole Hannah-Jones, reframing the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and contributions of Black Americans as central to our national narrative. "Eighteen" attempts to visually impress while encouraging consideration of a past and present that effect all of us. “As I am not an historian or writer, my aim is not to interpret the book or history. My goal was to create paintings that reflect my feeling and enlightenment upon reading the book.” As a Black abstract painter, Dixon is particularly interested in what enables or stimulates our human expressions. How do we learn to see what we cannot yet see? What are the things that influence our ability to perceive? His paintings can be described as abstract compositions influenced by personal experiences and efforts to capture moments in time that have a certain feeling and meaning. Through this process, he attempts to visually express his thoughts and ideas while remaining true to his hopes, aspirations, values, failures and deceptions. #finearts #abstractart #teddixon #the1619project #the18exhibit #pulitzerprize #artnews #artforum #artnewyork #eighteenhttps://lnkd.in/eT_jVnE3

Harmony in Chaos: The Minimalist Monk's Captivating Capture of Nature's DramaIn a single frame, the Minimalist Monk unveils a captivating scene where nature's serenity collides with the theatrics of the sky. A lone tree, its branches outstretched in silent contemplation, becomes the focal point against the backdrop of an otherworldly sky. The clouds, painted with a dramatic flair, evoke a sense of celestial chaos, reminiscent of a moment frozen in time—a sky ablaze, as if an explosion in the heavens has left billowing trails of smoke. The photograph encapsulates a paradox, where the stillness of the tree contrasts with the tumultuous narrative unfolding above. The Minimalist Monk's discerning lens captures not just an image but a visual symphony, where the tree stands as a resilient anchor amidst the cosmic drama. The play of light and shadow intensifies the atmospheric tension, lending an ethereal quality to the scene. This monochromatic masterpiece, in the monk's signature style, invites viewers to contemplate the dichotomy of calm and chaos, finding beauty in the unexpected collision of elements. In the hushed aftermath of the celestial spectacle, the lone tree remains, a stoic witness to the ever-shifting canvas of the sky—a poignant reminder that even in the midst of chaos, nature weaves its own quiet poetry.#blackandwhitephotography #theminimalistmonk #travelphotography #Malaysia

#foodforthoughtWhen demand exceeds supply, the forger will immediately appear. In Ancient Rome, when Greek sculpture became a symbol of status and authentic works were no longer available, Roman artisans quickly filled the void. Today, experts believe that nearly 90% of "original" Greek statues were made by Romans. At least that's what Thomas Hoving, former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and author of the book "False Impressions: The Hunt for Big-Time Art Fakes," claims. Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, clandestine workshops in Europe produced works in the style of masters like Michelangelo, Titian, and Ribera, and these forgeries continue to surface to this day. Some may never be identified as such. The falsification of artworks was so widespread that it seems even great masters were involved; a young Michelangelo once played a prank by sculpting a fake "Roman" sleeping Cupid and the head of a faun, which he buried in a garden to be discovered later. He later admitted what he had done.Provenance is a must-read for anyone interested in the intricate world of art forgery. Salisbury and Sujo's investigative journalism exposes the elaborate cons orchestrated by John Drewe and John Myatt. From fake ownership histories to mimicking famous artist styles, the lengths these forgers went to will leave you amazed. #Provenance #ArtForgery #InvestigativeJournalism

Foolery, tomfoolery, foolhardy, foolishness, and foolproof! Traces of the fool are everywhere! Particularly, in Western art from the 13th to the 16th century, this entertaining, chaotic, and subversive figure can be found everywhere from literature, to paintings, plays, sculptures, and tapestries. The Muse du Louvre is putting on an exciting exhibition 'FIGURES OF THE FOOL - From the Middle Ages to the Romantics' looking into the medieval and Renaissance roots of this fascinating figure. The exhibition sounds very promising and I will certainly have a look at this new perspective of a fascinating character!https://lnkd.in/en4m7ABd For all Büchernarren (German: book fools) Here is a picture of the title page of the English version of the Ship of Fools (Latin: Stultifera Navis) written by Sebastian Brant, now held Oriel College, Oxford Library. This edition was printed in 1570 and translated into English by Alexander Barclay. Sebastian Brant's satire, originally written in German, and published in 1494, decidedly shaped the image of the fool and soon became incredibly popular and was translated into Latin, French, and English. Read more about this in my next blogpost! Watch this space.#exhibition #rarebooks #manuscripts #literature #Louvre #museum

Like a Picasso painting that lets you see different sides at once, we have to understand the many forms of the myth to truly appreciate its power and relevance. What is fascinating really, is what the differences reveal, how they expose a critical feature or belief of a time or place. This point is perhaps best exemplified by one of the most divisive extreme characters from the ancient world: Medea.https://lnkd.in/gpCCTtsJ

The concept of identity has been one of the selling points in the art ecosystem, with the likes of Kerry James Marshall, Kehinde Wiley, and Kara Walker having worked for decades on the theme. The concept of identity in art comes to the fore when Black artists in the diaspora gain consciousness of the lack of Black figures in museums and galleries in Europe and America. They wanted to fill this space with Black figures; to this end, many artists have succeeded. On another scale, identity has also been seen as a means to play the body politics game, with the notion of how the “melanination” of an individual can make many assume the role this individual plays in the community. The function and the place the body can occupy can even create a limit, the maximum height certain bodies can attain. On another scale, identity has become a scalpel where people play with the ploy and twist of pronouns, with many identifying as whatsoever they will and feel like. This has soon become another underlying selling point in the art market. On closer introspection, the term identity comes from Medieval Latin, which means “identitatem,” meaning “sameness.” One’s identity is not determined by the person but rather by the one who creates that person. The title of an artwork is not determined by the artwork but by the artist, or sometimes the collector. So, human identity is determined by the creator of humans. The greatest sage once said, “Ask, ‘Whose image is this?’” and then concluded with, “Give unto God what belongs to God.” He teaches us to look upward rather than inward or outward when it comes to identity. You are created in the image (identity) of God. You are “identitatem,” sameness of God. Live like one.-Paul AYIHAWU #paulayihawu #artwriting
